Engineering
Siemens Engineering Pathway for High School is a two-year course of study presented as four single-year courses. Each course builds on the next and offers increasingly complex engineering problems for students to solve. Courses consist of multiple units, each with a unique problem, where students use sustained inquiry to create engineered solutions. Students are assessed for individual progress as well as group performance. Assessments are based on students’ progress with specific engineering, academic, and 21st-century skill competencies. Students weave their worldviews, ideas, and experiences into solutions for various engineering challenges to develop sustainable solutions for real-world problems.
Instructor Profile
Meredith Smith teaches Engineering and Science at ATA. Ms. Smith has over 25 years of teaching experience and has been at ATA for almost 16 of those years. Ms. Smith graduated from York College in Pennsylvania with a degree in Science and a minor in Physics. In addition to her undergraduate degree, Ms. Smith earned a certification in Chemistry from Wesley University in 1996 and obtained a Master’s degree in Education from Francis Marion University in 2002. Ms. Smith also holds certifications to teach AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and Project Lead the Way. Before coming to Horry County Schools in 2005, Ms. Smith taught in Marion County, South Carolina, Lakenheath, England, and Milford, Delaware. Ms. Smith was nominated as the ATA teacher of the year in 2018 and 2012, the ATA teacher of the month in 2015, and the Creek Bridge High School (Marion) teacher of the year in 2002. She received the Leadership Award from the Gear Up program at the University of South Carolina in 2003 and received the 2001 Year of the Child Award presented by the state of South Carolina. In addition to her love of teaching, Ms. Smith enjoys spending time with her family, reading novels, and is an active golfer and boater.
